Writing, rewriting and an award

So, the rewrite is complete, several edits on the rewrite have been done and now it’s ready to go back to the writing agency for another review – a more generalized one this time. I’m not sure what to expect from the experience – a part of me knows that in all likelihood there will be still more rewriting to be done – and dreads the prospect – and a part of me looks forward to perfecting the manuscript, in the hope that it will ultimately find itself a “home” – i.e. an agent and a contract.

Of course, given all things writing, recessions, trends and Lady Luck, it could be that even after all this work - and no doubt still more - the manuscript may not be accepted anywhere. What then? Who knows but I’ll cross that bridge when I get to it – armed with a sharp sword with which to deal with the crocodiles. What do you mean what crocodiles? The Crocodiles. There are always crocodiles – didn’t you know?!

In the meantime I have another manuscript to work on. The first draft was completed last year but I’m well aware that the plot needs deepening and the characterization needs strengthening. I’ll probably, once more, hold the original story in my head and start from scratch. As it is, the first couple of chapters that I’ve already dabbled with are turning up in a completely new “voice” – which is proving to be both interesting and considerably more “immediate”.

But enough writery stuff – I was given an award last week by Keren David, a debut YA author, who’s first novel, When I Was Joe will be published in the UK by Frances Lincoln books in January 2010. And in time-honoured fashion, I’m suppose to a) pass on the award and b) share seven things about me.

The award is the Kreativ Blogger award and the rules are:

1. Thank the person who nominated you for this award.
2. Copy the logo and place it on your blog.
3. Link to the person who nominated you for this award.
4. Name 7 things about yourself that people might find interesting.
5. Nominate 7 Kreativ Bloggers.
6. Post links to the 7 blogs you nominate.
7. Leave a comment on each of the blogs letting them know they have been nominated.

Seven things about me - which you may or may not find interesting...

1. I am an “only-child”. Yep that’s right, no siblings.

2. Although I love writing for children, I’ve never been remotely inclined to have any of my own.

3. My favourite dog is the Golden Retriever.

4. I have nearly died on two completely separate occasions – makes you wonder what I’m still doing here, right…

5. I am currently researching material for a non fiction article on porcupines who live amongst some vines… the vines below, in particular.

6. Although writing is my passion, I still wonder what I’m going to be when I really grow up – if I ever grow up.

7. I’ve consumed far too much chocolate this winter.

As you know I don’t usually pass these awards on but I’ll play nicely this time…

So, the Kreativ Blogger Award goes to the following seven people (why only seven, it’s so totally unreasonable!):

Tessa at Aerial Armadillo
Lola at Aglio, Olio & Peperoncino
Val at Monkeys on the Roof
Janey at Wittering On
Mandy at Fire Byrd
Carol at Not Only in Thailand
Lori at Lori Times Five

(and no, the list isn't intentionally sexist - sorry, boys...)

And now let me attend to the squirrel who is tapping impatiently at the window for his supper.

wowee thank you AbVan! high praise indeed coming from such a consumate and creative wordsmith. I am in awe of your prolific-ness (is that a word?) x

Thank you ma'm, like Val I consider it an hounour to be thought good enough to receive such an honour next to you consumate skill as a writer.

You know when people point out things (f. ex: you about the sexist thing) I get suspicious. I was on a date so I was not attending the parades this year.

ropi is so funny.

yay! your rewrite is done! don't worry about those crocs, just give them some of your chocolates.
Congratulations on the well deserved Award, and thanks for passing it to me, I will not lose this one!

Nicky thank you very much for my award and congratulations on yours. And on completing the rewrite!

I have been a little lazy with awards, both giving them and aknowledging the ones received. But know that I treasure each with great affection. I am truly honored.

I agree with Lori, chocolate will take care of those pesky crocs.

Big hugs,
~Lola

Well done on the lovely award. My brother had a beautiful golden retriever who had 13 puppies! She died aged 15 and was doing really well right upto a few weeks before they had her put to sleep.

Best of luck with the rewrite. I haven't got to that stage yet!

Aw - aren't you sweet? Thank you very much my dahlink. Those Pooches of yours were so gorgeous. I'm a big big fan of the Goldie myself.

I love these, short, sweet and to the point but I'm most interested about porcupines among the vines . . bet the pickers get a bit of a shock each vintage!

Writing, rewriting, polishing...never ending tasks of the professional creator. Congratulations on your award! Keep inventing characters and plot turns.

Good luck with the review!

Val, you are an equally creative wordsmith - your lion post was just brilliant!

YOu deserve it, FireByrd!

Ha, I think you just like being suspicious, Ropi! ;-) Hope the date was good!

No, Lori, not sharing my choc with crocs - ha, what a thought! ;-)

Enjoy the award, Lola and I know just what you mean about being lazy with awards, I get a bit like that too! ;-)

Both my Goldies went on to 14 and 15 respectively, CJ, and I think they're just the best dogs in the world! ;-)
Rewriting, I've learned, is more part of the process than the actual writing! Eek!

Megan, my thighs beg to differ...

They were rather handsome, weren't they, Janey! :-)

I'm looking forward to finding out more too about those 'pines amongst the vines, Baino - the porcupines are nocturnal though and generally fairly shy, so I doubt anyone would run into them in daylight, but you never know...

It feels, these days, Lakeviewer, more like rewriting, rewriting and rewriting... Can't remember when I last wrote as opposed to rewrote!

Thanks, Rob!

Thank you very much my dear...I am very honoured and shall display it with pride :-)

I do have to say....don't worry about the crocodiles...it's the sheep that you need to look out for!!! *grins*

Good luck with the review...I'm sure your manuscript will find a home...you write beautifully!!

You write so beautifully, and so witty, and with such pointedness (can I say all this in German?!)that I`m sure the publishers will stand in line to get hold of your manuscript! I just loved your Ms Bo stories - who else could have invented all those extra characters and descriptions? Will you make a book of her, too? I wish you all the best, Nicky! And yes, you picked the right award mates! Exactly my choice!

Absolute Vanilla (and Atyllah) said...

The sheep are indeed a worry, Carol, and I'm figuring out how to sheep proof the house...
;-)

Aw,Geli, thank you! I don't know if I will ever do anything with the Ms Bo stories, maybe one day, sometimes you need time and distance to put stories into a good context :-)

Congratulations!...on your rewrite and your award. You're an inspiration to me, Absolute!

Wow! A well deserved award - and interesting to learn those 7 things (although I could have guessed about the chocolate). But now you must tell us how you nearly died on 2 occasions. It's not fair to keep us in suspense, Nicky!

lettuce said...

i look forward to hearing more about the porcupines

(don't grow up. i think its best not to)

steph said...

I must be on the same wavelength as Jenny as I'm dying to know more about how you nearly died - twice!

And btw... people with passion go places, people without...go nowhere!

Rewrites are always an interesting process. Sometimes they can dilute the original creativity!

Absolute Vanilla (and Atyllah) said...

I'm running rather horribly behind here, Wolf, but I'll see if your Michael Crichton quote is still visible! Thanks! ;-)

Oh yikes, Ms Bo in book form... Want to collaborate, Pat? ;-)

Chocolate IS fun, Rambler, fancy you not knowing that! ;-)

Thanks, Sue ;-)

Aw, thanks, Marion!

I'm sure I've already written about the one near death experience already, Jenny... :-)

I agree, Lettuce, growing up is not worth it! And I'll let you know about the porcupines when the article is done - but it's proving to be really interesting!

As I said to Jenny, Steph, I think I've written about the one experience, in story form, somewhere on the blog... :-)

I do sometimes worry about rewrites, David, but I have to say in this instance it has made the novel that much better by being so much tighter.
