But on to other things. On the day after New Year, D and I decided to mooch down to Simon's Town, a seaside suburb about 30 minutes down the coast (depending on the traffic). Simon's Town, named after Simon van der Stel, the Dutch governor of the Cape Colony between 1677 and 1699, is the operational headquarters of the South African Navy, though these days it's claim to fame is its colony of penguins which you may remember from a previous blog post. Come and wander with me and have a peek at this gorgeously colonial seaside town.
St George's Street, the Simon's Town section of the main road that runs from Cape Town all the way to Cape Point
Simon's Town harbour - the False Bay Yacht Club is in the foreground and you can see the battleships in the background
The British Hotel on St Georges. The restaurant with the green awnings, Bon Appetit, serves sublime French cuisine.Simonstown's most famous "resident" was a Great Dane, called Just Nuisance, who was officially enlisted into the Royal Navy as Able Seaman. "His trade was listed as "Bonecrusher" and his religious affiliation as "Scrounger", although it was later altered to the more charitable "Canine Divinity League (Anti-Vivisection)"."

We saw this mom and her daughter fishing for their lunch from the pier... And decided we needed lunch too.
But instead of going to Bertha's Landing, a popular harbour-side restaurant...
And outside we spotted this chap, selling carved guinea fowl with nodding heads. Yes, of course we bought one!
The Lord Nelson Inn - it is thought that Nelson once came ashore in Simon's Town - the locals have never forgotten that!
The Simon's Town Superette - a local "corner shop" that harks back to another era before supermarkets and malls.

I definitely agree with you, it is gorgeous.
Great pictures.

Beautiful little place. I could spend hours doing long lunches by the water and pootling around the shops. Maybe your bobbly headed guinea fowl could be a decoy for the agro one!
Wow.... beautiful library! I love peeking into town like this, and thanks for the chance!!! Take care, Nicky, and thanks for my little Facebook message!!!
I love Simon's Town and your wonderful photos took me right back down memory lane! You've really captured the essence of that lovely little seaside 'dorp' - thank you for sharing those.
oops - just told Cybèle about Just Nuisance. I'm afraid we have a severe case of hero worship breaking out...as well as a touch of jealousy. "What did that Adinda have that I don't have?" she asked me. "Proximity, dear. Proximity." (She's thinking that one over at the moment.)
Meanwhile, I hope you won't mind if I "lift" the Africana Books photo for my personal bulletin board?
Great stroll that was, av. Thanks muchly.
P.S. Should you need any other recipes for braised guinea fowl, let me know (braised sound like the only way to go in this instance.) :-)
Thanks, CJ! xx
Yep, it's just that sort of place, Baino, good for pootling and lunching and then more pootling :-)
It's funny seeing other parts of the world like this, isn't it, Susan. Hope you're over the bad throat.
Ah, I wondered if you'd read this post and take a trip down memory lane, Tessa :-)
You might also tell Cybele, RLB, that Just Nuisance was kind of before her time. Or perhaps you might put it to her that how can she be sure that she wasn't in fact Adinda in another life? That should keep her thinking for a while yet. There may even be a story in it for the great mystery authoress!
Yes, absolulely, go ahead and lift the pic by all means.
And yes, I agree, I think braising is the only way to go...
Brilliant, av. "Adinda in another time" is just what Cybèle needed to hear. She put her head down with a sigh, and went straight to sleep. Wish I could check in on her dreams :-) (you're right, she'll find some way to work Just Nuisance into her stories.)
I've really enjoyed my wander round. The sea is spectaular. And I really wanted to climb those steps up the alley to the bright blue sky.
xx
What a wondeful place...I needed to travel today!
A really nice part of the world. It's sad (well nice of course, but you know what I mean) to see that wrought iron, most of which came from Britain a long time ago, and which has not survived there.
They collected it as part of the war effort (WWII), but never used it because it was low grade. But that was that - gone!
Nice to C you're part of the World.
Do you ever see many "trade beads" anywhere in your vicinity?
Cheers!
I found this from the My Town Monday Link List. What an adorable little town! I absolutely love that last picture.
Simon's Town is a great little town and we used to enjoy a drive out of the city and wander about ending with a treat at the pancake place!
Yummy! Is it still there?
what a wonderful town to visit. i am very envious........
you strolled in flip flops.....or could i am sure....sigh....
history,
shops,
sunshine and ice cold beer
sigh.....
we have had snow 3 days out of every 4 since some time in november.....last year was the most snow in over 70 years and we are on our way to beating that record.....and where are you....meandering and lollygagging in sunshine!?!?!?
storm
btw i do think you should consider getting a large order of the bobbling birds....get the name 'bo' affixed and offer them for sale on your blog.....great way to raise funds for the guinea sanctuary....lol
You bought a guinea fowl???
Ummm .... *speechless*
This little seaside town is the essence of charm. Thank you for bringing us all along! Hope you have been well.
Love these pics, especially the sign. Looks like a nice place to visit!
Fabulous!
Wish I was THERE!
LOVED the Husband Creche - I could do with one of those at the moment - mine is getting under my feet and hindering my blogging ;D
oh would love a creche like that for me :)
What a lovely looking town for ambling ... thanks for bringing some sunshine and warmth and seaside views to my day.
lovely photo report here... do you think they'd also have a guinea creche somewhere?
What a glorious place. The architecture, the setting, the colours. Thank you for our tour. I could certainly potter awhile there:-)
wonderful! hey I gave you a blog award, come by and pick it up!
xx
Oh yikes! Way behind on replying to comments again. Will someone please tell me where time goes?!
Ha, see, at least Cybele has gone quiet, RLB and is no doubt dreaming romantic dreams... ;-)
It's a very inviting sort of place, isn't it, FireByrd.
So glad to take you travelling with me, Gail!
Well aside from the war collecting effort, Ernest, not much survives that close to the sea. I stayed at a place literally on the beach in the Wilderness some years back - yikes, talk about corrosion and the general impact of the sea air on everything. The "broekie lace" is just not suited to this climate, never mind any other kind of pilfering.
Yeah, but mostly at highly specialist place, Coffee Messiah.
Hi Lauren, thanks for stopping by, glad you enjoyed the wander around!
You know, Rob, now that you mention it, I don't think the pancake place is there, at least, if it is, I didn't see it. Mind you, that's not saying much... ;-)
Well, I send you tubfulls of sunshine and warmth, Storm - it's hot here at the moment, about 32 degrees C. So yes, very summery and shorts and flip flop weather - least it's not as hot as it seems to be in Sydney at the moment!
Hey, Laquet, what can I say... ;-)
Hi Princess Haiku, nice to see you around again. Hope you are well too?
It's a delightful place to visit, Rob, you should try it sometime :-)
I thought the husband creche was the best, Miladysa! Very handy!
LOL, Rambler! So do you get underfoot when taken shopping?! :-)
Glad you enjoyed it, VioletSky!
Yeah, they do have guinea creches, Bart, at the World of Birds! ;-)
Well, what's keeping you, Lane, come on over and we'll go for a potter! :-)
Hi, Carolyn and thanks!
Wonderful virtual wander, Vanilla! Thank you! The pics are gorgeous and I can appreciate their warmth even better on this cold winter day.
Nice photos. It is quite cold here though.
Looks like a great place. Love the photos. I feel like I've had a mini trip.
I enjoyed it very much, thank you!
I THOUGHT I wrote something, but I am sick and must have forgotten. Wonderful süot, and beautiful pictures, as always. Wish we had such nice weather, here is only fog and frozen earth, bleah. But even if I don`t write, you know I`m with you, don`t you Nicky?
Glad to send some warmth your way during your chilly winter, Vesper! xxx
Well, I'll send you some sunshine then, Ropi! ;-)
So glad you enjoyed the "trip", Geri!
It's my pleasure, Megan!
Aw, I'm sorry you're ill, Angela - actually I've not been too well myself hence the lack of blogging and blog visiting. And yes, of course I know you're with me in spirit. xxx
looks very interesting, be back to read, hopefully soon.
