Bo Peep and a weirdly, randomly meme

Bo gets a visitor - no, this isn't a member of her family

Apologies for a being a tad absent at the moment, but life’s been a bit silly and the next stage of editing is beginning, which means I’m off with my head in a story. Meanwhile Operation Bo continues and when we last saw the family, they were down to two chicks – meaning another had disappeared overnight. We think the majority of the chicks were taken by the howling storm that hit the south western Cape on Tuesday night and lasted for two days. It was the worst storm in 30 years, had wind speeds that went right off the graph, and caused massive flooding and destruction. While the storm raged, Bo, much to her indignation, was kept indoors and today was the first day we moved the guinea pig pen, now the guinea fowl pen, outdoors and onto the grass. Although it didn’t stop her from trying to escape, she’s a much happier little bird for being outside. Meanwhile the old dog traveling cage, big enough to house a large Golden Retriever, has been pressed into service as the inside guinea house. It’s high enough to give her space to fly a bit and we’re trying to encourage her to use her wings. As an aside and working on a hunch, I’ve also discovered she’s particularly partial to freshly squished snail…and made a right piggy of herself guzzling it down. The plan is to release her as soon as she has her wings (the sparrowhawk’s forays into the garden notwithstanding) at a time when her family is here. By comparison to the two remaining chicks, Bo remains very small, but she is growing. D reminded me of a bulldog pup his mum bred some years ago – a runt, so tiny as to be pathetic, yet after a year he grew into the biggest bulldog they’d ever seen. I’m hoping Bo will make it to Guinea Queen!

Bo munches on a snail

Guineas aside, the lovely Val over at Monkeys on the Roof (do go and read her blog, it’s wonderful) has tagged me for the Seven Weird or Random Things About Me meme. I’ve been tagged for this once before and that chicken was “good enough” to do said meme. I guess this time I’m just going to have to answer it myself.

The idea is to reveal seven random and or weird things about myself. Hmm, I hope you’re up for this…

The rules are:
1. Link to your tagger and list these rules on your blog.
2. Share 7 facts about yourself - some random, some weird.
3. Tag 7 people at the end of your post by leaving their names as well as links to their blogs.
4. Let them know they have been tagged by leaving a comment on their blogs.

So here goes nothin’…

1. I have met and embraced death and look forward to going home.

2. At the tender age of 47 I’m pleased to say I can still do the splits and can still get my forehead on the ground while sitting with my legs stretched out to the sides.

3. I’ve had two close encounters with leopards in the wild.

4. I’ve eaten a wide variety of weird and wonderful things from elephant to giraffe, mopani worms to snails, frogs’ legs to snake, crocodile to shark.

5. I weigh the same now as I did at 23 years ago – which I figure isn’t too bad.

6. I wrote my first play when I was eight and charged the neighbourhood kids 5 cents to watch it. It was set on rollerskates, thus predating Starlight Express by several years. Performed on our back porch, it ran for precisely one day.

7. I have travelled most of the world, though strangely have never been to the USA.

Now, to tagging… I tag:

Gaye
Lori Ann
Miladysa
Janey
Lane
Ello
Megan

Oh go on, ya know you wanna… :-)

Glad Bo is doing so well. Such a cutey :)

Good list, my eyes arched in surprise several times. And now I shall be forced to try and bend my body to prove I too am flexible, only thing is, it will of course end by proving that I am not. I shall not however feel in any way inspired to prove that I can also eat interesting things, nope, I know I can't, and I'm okay with that. (though I have heard that some countries consider PB&J wild and crazy, in which case, I could claim something.)

Grow, Bo!

I liked your list. That is quite the range of footstuffs. I'll start thinking...

P.S. Best of luck with the editing!

Sounds like some storm. Good meme - I've got as far as crocodile, sharks and snails on the food stakes plus winkles and rock samphire (seaweed).

Phew, admire the same weight factoid!

I advocate yoga for flexibility, Taff :-) And as for PB&J - yep I consider that totally crazy! I'd far sooner eat snails ;-)

It's a worrying range of foodstuffs, that's what it is, Megan. My dad was an adventurous eater and taught me to be the same, until the day I came home from work and told him I'd eaten mopani worms. I think at that point I outclassed him totally! ;-)

It was a terrible storm, Julie, and the damage has been huge. It's now spread to the east and eight people have been killed as a result. D's parents picked up a hailstone that was 6inches in diameter in their garden - and that's in a subtropical climate.
As for the foods, yep, I've done the winkles, sea urchins etc and although I've not tried rock samphire, I've had the various Japanese seaweeds used in sushi. :-)

Bo is very very sweet.

Number 1 is a bit sinister. Have I missed something??

Glad that Bo has got some fresh air. It must've been a bit scary to be inside. I'm sure if she keeps getting squashed snail she'll be the size of a turkey before you know it (but hopefully not till after Thanksgiving eh!)

I will get to your meme early next week. It's going to take a few days to come up with 7 interesting things about me. My splits days have long since gone and 23 years ago I was about 4 stone lighter than I am now (I was scary skinny then mind you!) - I keep meaning to take up yoga again - I know I'd love it but finding the unhindered child free time - that's the hard part.

av: Bo will turn into the Goddess of the Guinea Fowl - Cybèle says so, it MUST be true :-)

Bo is cute indeed, Ernest and feisty in spirit.
As for No 1, I have posted about it in short story form before - and no, it's not sinister though was scary at the time - and then not. Let's just call it a life-changing experience. :-)

Well, I'm thinking of introducing live earthworms today, Janey, having discovered the compost heap is alive with them. And the sweetest thing is, I left the patio security doors open this morning to see what would happen and her mum and two remainig siblings came in to visit her. She'll go out in the garden when the sun is up and we'll see what happens then.

Gaye, angel, I knew I could count on you - and I know it will be a goodie! xxx

You know what, RLB, I think Cybele is bang on the money! ;-)

She's a very lucky guinea. Ah mopani worms - only once, never again thanks.

so glad Bo is thriving! they do eat a lot of beetles and bugs as well as grass and veg matter - perhaps try mincemeat when snails are hard to find? or pronutro? I hope she stays with you even when she can fly - you will have so much fun with her - altho i believe house training is a challenge...

well done on the meme - fascinating! the first one is VERY intruiging..??
and perhaps the wierd and adventurous diet is in part accountable for your girlish figure. Doing the splits - wow - couldnt even do that when i was girlish!

Thanks for playing meme :-) and for the kind words about mine!
xx

Well done on the birdysitting, very noble, thoughtful and I too am surpisingly flexible for a fat old cow but I can't do the splits but . . as for "5. I weigh the same now as I did at 23 years ago – which I figure isn’t too bad." Biatch!

Flexible, slim, well travelled. Now I don't feel guilty beating your Scramble score:-)

Thanks for the tag. I will rake my brains sometime this week.

Good luck with the editing and hope little Bo makes it to Queen. She deserves to:-)

Absolute Vanilla (and Atyllah) said...

Yep, I also tried mopani worms once, Laquet and that was quite enough! ;-)

We've been hunting out bugs and beetles and earthworms from the compost heap, Val and there's no shortage of snails around here...
As for housetraining, well her parents came into the house this morning to see her - before we let her out - and left great big calling cards!
As for #1, same applies as what I said to Ernest, above :-)
xxx

Oh well, Baino, what can I say... exercise, avoid sugar and too many carbs... ;-P

Well, I'd try to "beat you back", Lane, but I can't get Scramble to load at all - I think it must be on your side! ;-)
Looking forward to reading your answers to the meme!

Oh what an oppression, 5 cents!! :P Well I was approximately 11 when I was last able to make a perfect split. I am a goalkeeper at European football so I can still stretch quite well when necessary but I prefer efficient moves over spectacular ones. I have mainly traveled in Europe only.

dbalehane said...

Also I must apologise for being absent a bit lately! A few things have been going on. Still, looks like I came back just in time to find out some rather wonderful, if odd, things about you! ;)

Absolute Vanilla (and Atyllah) said...

Well, 5 cents was a lot of money back in those days, Ropi! ;-) As for spectacular vs efficient moves, I try to go for both! ;-P

Hey, Lehane - hope both NaNo and the moustache are going well! ;-)

I can stand on my hands but it hurts my fingers. Hope you weren't doing the splits when you met those leopards, need to be up and away!

I can sleep easier knowing that Bo is safe :D

Dang - got me with the MEME ;D

encounters with leapords sound too scary

Gorgeous Bo!

That has to be one of the most interesting meme's I've ever read! I have never been able to do the splits and at the tender age of 38 I dare say I ever will!!

Hi Nicky! I am typing again, finally : ) Well, a split-able woman. Heck yes. Very funny and I'd be terribly proud. And, come on over to the US! We have good... theater productions... um... well, yeah. : )

Wow! Great to hear that Little Bo is doing well under your care. And how sweet that her mum and two siblings paid her a visit... aah!

As regards the meme... I'm WELL IMPRESSED! 'Nuf said!

Absolute Vanilla (and Atyllah) said...

Yeah, standing on your hands can hurt a lot, Jon, I know... ;-)

I sleep easier too knowing she is safe, Miladysa - I've turned into a right old worry wart as it is!

Actually, Rambler, the leopard encounters weren't too scary, but that's probably because I was a bit oblivious to the reality!

If it's any consolation, CJ, I was only able to do the splits for the first time in my early 20s - after a couple of years of yoga.

So glad you are typing again, Susan, hope you're back is all better and you're ready to be up and at 'em! :-)

I'm relieved she's doing well too, Steph, we just take it one day at a time. She doesn't appear to be sickly, just very small and she certainly has a strong spirit.

Way to go, Bo!
