It was another hellish day in Africa... as an old friend used to say. It's a tough life but someone has to do it, as another friend said.
It was one of those Sundays filled with blue skies, sunshine, whales, penguins, good food and more sunshine.
And all of it took place only 15 minutes from home. Seriously. No schlepping off to Hermanus to watch whales. We were in fact just planning a short trip down the coast to commune with the colony of African Penguins - and then we saw familiar splashing in the sea...
It turned into a wonderful day, which looked like this:
And then we wended our way back home.

Now, there are huge numbers of whale pictures, penguin pictures and a few landscape shots. Do you want to see more? Especially the whales and penguins? The whale shots are the best I've managed to get so far, I think.
If you're up for more, let me know.

Blogging is sometimes like a daily world tour! Thanks, Vanilla.
Jaw dropping. Just marvellous - thanks for letting us see it through your lens.
Well I sat in bed in my jammies all day typing so nyerr!
I'm not remotely jealous - really!
Seriously I've never seen sea that beautiful colour blue. I know this beauty belies all the troubles on your doorstep but my oh my - how stunning is it?
I particularly love the rock pool. I'm fascinated by those little eco-systems.
Well I'm off down stairs to drown in the wit and sparkle of Stephen Fry taking us on a tour of the US. Tis a day for virtual travelling it seems.
Oh yes - and yes - more penguins please.
Oh wow, I'd love more penguin shots. I love 'em!

*chants* whale pics, whale pics! more, more, more!!!
Yes please, pretty please with sugar on top.
I fell in love with the Boulders Beach. It reminded me again I have missed swimming in the sea so much. The salt on my skin.
I have through through in total over a year of autum and winter with an half arsed spring so I am up for some summer action!
It looks like you had a wonderful relaxing day. :)
Gx
Dammit, way more success with whales than me! You're very lucky to have them so close to home. More please. Gorgeous weather is spring I have to say! Lovely peeking into your world once again. Like you said, it's a tough job but someone has to do it!
you are a tease av. I read past the opening, holding my breath for the horrors about to unfold ...
glad life can be (very) good there still - well done.
the one titled "food on the wings" is too good..would love to see more of that

Bloody gorgeous - bet the water was cold though ;o) ... well I've got to make myself feel better somehow.
My pleasure, Minx!
Glad you enjoyed it, VV
No, of course you're not jealous at all, I understand completely, Janey. More penguins will appear during the week...
Okay, Silver, you're on! ;-)
Okay, Aerin, more whales pics on the way too.
Boulders is a gorgeous little beach, Gaye, I used to go there as a child. These days it's still gorgeous but you can end up jostling for the best spot with the penguins. And er, because of the pingus it can get a wee bit whiffy.
The whales have only been coming this close to Cape Town shores in recent years, Baino - and of course the more they come, the more come - if you know what I mean. I've never seen so many in False Bay - which, since it is literally around the corner, is deeply cool. I'm thinking I might have to stop writing and just spend the next few months whale watching down the road! ;-)
It's a strange place, as you well know, Ernest - such vast contrasts and contradictions. The beauty remains and always will, just wish we could sort out all the other problems and it would be paradise.
That was a really lucky shot, Rambler - I think I missed a few good whale shots snapping away at the seagull! :-)
I don't know, Laquet, there were a few people swimming, so it can't have been that bad. But it will be glorious come December - February! It's on the warm water side of Cape Town.
Well, you did warn me. Sigh...... :-)
Angela told me to come here because we had similar sentiments on poverty / hunger. Great to read, and love the Boulder's pics, one of my fave places. Thank you! Shall be popping in more frequently.
I did indeed, Sue, I therefore absolve myself of all responsibility! ;-)
Hi Tam, thanks for stopping by - and you have a great blog - you've raised some brilliant points in your current post - going to send a friend your way.
I enjoyed your day out very much. Lovely photos, it's impossible to choose a favourite.
Beautiful is a too small a word for what you've shown in these photos, Vanilla! Thank you. They are superb!
I love penguins... More pics are welcome! :-)
Good grief! Beautiful. And then I got to the food and the garden. *sigh*
Yes, more please:-)
would love to see more of the whales and penguins!!
these are stunning pics - thanks you
your post is so lovely it's almost unkind to those of us living in england.
The yachts and the whales in the same pic--priceless! Great shot, great post!
very very beautiful pictures expertly taken! honestly i will definitely go visit you in South Africa in due course.
Glad you enjoyed the virtual day out, Pat :-)
Okay, more pics will be forthcoming, Vesper :-)
Right ho, Lane, will get more pics up soon.
Glad you enjoyed them Val! And good to see you back again :-)
And just think, Candy, here I am planning on giving it all up. Sad, isn't it.
Thanks, Billy!
Well, best you get here while I'm still here, CS! :-)
Capetown is BEAUTIFUL!!!! And, Nicky, I am so sorry -- I didn't get all your questions to Cynthia answered, as she wrote back before you posted -- but thanks so much for writing!! And, as it fatefully turns out, a few of your questions WERE answered, anyways!!! Be well... Susan!
way tough, av. Be brave, girl and enjoy the good stuff :-)
penguins and whales? Bring them on!
It is beautiful indeed, Susan - it's that combination of sea, mountains, vineyards coupled with a Mediterranean climate.
And you did a great job with the interview!
Yeah, tough, RLB, but someone's got to do it, right? ;-)
Simply stunning stuff! AV
I've never seen anything like the colour in the rock pool and the ?nasturtiums in the coastal shot make it look like a painting!
I want MORE please
YAY!!!!
Those are fantastic shots! I love it.... so gorgeous. I am completely jealous.
You inspire me so much, all the time. Thank you for it.
Scarlett & Viaggiatore
What I wouldn't do to have a day like that! I LOVE the whales! And the penguins! And the gull! The whole day!
Ooops, I forgot.
Yes, please, more would be delightful!!!
Scarlett & Viaggiatore
Now these are just fantastic - I would love to see more (and the antipasto looked particularly mouthwatering too!).
It is indeed a tough life, I don't know how you managed to cope with all this ;-)
You are giving it up? If you moved here, we could also watch seagulls together... I am glad you and Tam connected. Would be great if you two (and Janelle) got that Pulitzer Prize for rattling up the world!! (Include pictures of the whales and penguins and rocks in your book!)
More will be up this afternoon, Steph! ;-) And yes, those are nasturtiums.
So glad you enjoyed the shot, Scarlett - sorry to make you jealous! ;-)
Hi Lisa, so glad you enjoyed the virtual day out! :-)
It was a struggle coping with it, Trousers, but someone had to do it ;-)
Geli, I think Tam, Janelle and I are uniquely placed to comment on the world - I think we see stuff where we are that most never encounter. Every time I go out, I am hit between the eyes with the flipside of all this beauty and it tears at my soul. It's a mad, mad world.
Am I dreaming?
"Sundays filled with blue skies, sunshine, whales, penguins,"
Your photographs have really opened my eyes to South Africa.
For some reason I always pictured red earth, nervous antelopes and insects of unwelcome varieties before we were introduced :D
Ah, see, it depends entirely on where you are, Miladysa! Your vision is not wrong, only it doesn't apply to the bit of South Africa where I live. We're a bit of an anomaly, really, a Mediterranean climate, vegetation which is more Italian or Californian and a general sense of insisting on remaining the last European outpost in Africa (which I can assure you makes many very angry!). I suppose you might call South Africa "many worlds in one country" - it's very diverse.
how fabulous
(as were the orange poppies)
