Best of Birds (KNP 13)

Yellow-billed Hornbill - you've met him before...

"Spring is sprung and da grass is riz, I wonder where da boidies is?
Da boid is on da wing!
But dat's absoid! Da wing is on da boid!"

Yes, well, that's quite enough words for today - too many pictures of birds - so let's just be getting on, shall we?

Whiteheaded vultures - Can you see dinner, Harry?

Tawny Eagle at the waterhole - he sure scared off the impala...

Pied Kingfishers at Lake Panic - oh and an Egyptian Goose too

Mousebird at dawn

Lilac-breasted Roller - I'm so pretty, oh so pretty...

Ground Hornbill - Who? Me? Uh...duh...

Grey Loerie - this time not hopping up a tree (as it usually does).

Grey Hornbill - neat camouflage

Grey Heron - coming in to land

Grey Heron - so stately

One Glossy Starling...

... and another Glossy Starling. Total iridescence.

Flycatcher - where are those flies...

Crested Barbet - bright bird indeed

Bokmakierrie - sweet sort of chap

Bee-eater - bzzzzzzz....

African Jacana - oh look at me!

Vulture - so whaddayawanna do today, I dunno, whaddayawanna do...?
(Remember the Jungle Book vultures...?)

That lilac one is pretty but I think the one with that tuft stuck up on his head would have to be my favorite! Thanks for sharing, I love knowing birds from all over.

Oh gorgeous, and pretty, and comical and elegant! I love the hornbills particularly. I had a blogger who posted birds every day but she's gone awol - you've certainly stepped up to the plate here! The heron in flight is awesome!

The only thing more impressive than those pics is the fact that you can actually name all of those birds!

So KNP was a blast. Good for you :)

Glad you enjoyed them, Deana, the tufted chap is quite comical! :-)

Thanks, Sameera - the colours on some of them are really quite amazing, aren't they!

Thanks! I think the hornbills are wonderful too, Baino, mostly because they have so much character.

Well, if it's any consolation, Kyklops, I wouldn't have been able to do the naming thing without Robert's handy guide! :-)

Yep, indeed it was, Saaleha! :-)

Hi,
I gave you an award on my blog today. Enjoy!

i love the pics, they are amazing! And God, you know all the names! I am so bad with birds :P

Absolute Vanilla (and Atyllah) said...

Thanks, Sue! You're a sweetie.

Trust me, Lena, I had look up most of the names - I didn't "know" them all! :-)

Vesper said...

I love birds!!!

I wanted to express my amazement at your knowledge of bird names but I read your answer to Kyclops... :-)
Anyway, stunning pics! Thank you!

well if I can't express my amazement at your encyclopedic knowledge*, I can at least thank you for taking the time to look up the names and posting them. Much appreciated.

As for the photos, each time I scrolled down, I thought "oh! this is my favorite" then "oh!! This is my Favorite" then "OH...." and so on.

Thanks. Much appreciated.

*+ it's one step closer to encyclopedic now, isn't it :-)

Glad you liked them, Vesper! :-) Sorry I wasn't able to impress with brilliant bird knowledge though - well not without admitting I'd resorted to a resource! ;-) xxx

Oh yes, RLB, it's definitely one step closer to encyclopedic now! ;-) So glad you enjoyed the pics!

Some of the birds look similar to Hungarian species.

From sweet to pretty, comical to scary.

Aren't they fantastic. Thank you:-)

Oh yes, birds I love. My favourite being the flamingo.
Birds remind me of oceans and wide open spaces. I think there's something special about seeing them first thing in the mornings.

Jefferson Davis said...

Brilliant shots all, AV. Absolutely stunning birds! You are making me very jealous! :)

Rob said...

Beautiful shots!

Absolute Vanilla (and Atyllah) said...

I think some of them may be migratory birds, Ropi but then one also finds different members of the same species across the world.

Glad you enjoyed the chirpy, croaky, cheepy, shrieky feathered friends, Lane! :-)

For me I think it's a toss up between the lilac breasted roller and that cheeky hornbill, Scarlett! :-) And yeah, aren't those vultures in the Jungle Book movie just great! :-)

Seeing and hearing them early in the morning is indeed a very special blessing, Suzan.

Aw gee... sorry JD! ;-)

Thanks, Rob - hope you're feeling better.

The "Lilac-breasted Roller" is my fave.

Thanks, as always, Nicky! Maybe your second calling is in photography!

You do know your birds, don't you?

Teeming Universe said...

Great photographs. There is a fabulous variety of species on show. I particularly liked the look of the Ground Hornbill (looks like a real character) and the pictures of the Grey Heron.

Absolute Vanilla (and Atyllah) said...

He's certainly a colourful chap, isn't he, Rob :-)

Well, I do do a tiny bit of freelance photography with my freelance journalism, Susan, so yeah, maybe... :-)

Only with the help of a field guide, Middle Ditch! :-)

The ground hornbill (and his wife, who was a few steps behind) was a real character indeed, Teeming Universe! And welcome to my blog! ;-)

what wonderful pictures vanilla. the mousebird is so sweet! and the roller does look as though it knows it is pretty....

i love the landing heron picture. Herons often manage to look both ungaiinly and graceful somehow. And the starling is gorgeous - much more irridescent than our starlings - which are also speckled, and very very rude.

Debi said...

You are going to do something with these amazing pix, aren't you? Please tell me you are. They're stunning!

Absolute Vanilla (and Atyllah) said...

We also have those rude, speckled starlings here, Lettuce :-) - and red wing starlings who imitate every other bird and sing so sweetly!

Erm, no, I hadn't planned to Debi. What did you have in mind? :-)
