Searching for Autumn

Much inspired by some of the lovely autumnal shots I saw on several blogs last year, I decided to try and capture some autumn colours of my own. Only I forgot one small detail. We tend not to have much of an Autumn. We seem instead to go from summer to winter with nothing more than a vague murmur inbetween. So many of the trees seem to keep their green foliage until the first big blow of winter, at which point, giving themselves a good shake they shed their clothes and stand in glorious nakedness for winter. But that waywardness didn't stop me from trying to capture a glimpse of Autumn anyway. A trip to the arboretum and vineyards just up the road produced the the images below. Some are experimental, with me trying to capture good bokeh on some of the shots.

And since I'm not feeling overly creative in the words department right now - yes, I know, a terribly sin for a writer to admit, but there you go, it happens, I thought I'd share this with you - while you're enjoying Spring!

ODE TO AUTUMN
by John Keats

Season of mists and mellow fruitfulness!
Close bosom-friend of the maturing sun;
Conspiring with him how to load and bless
With fruit the vines that round the thatch-eaves run;
To bend with apples the mossed cottage-trees,
And fill all fruit with ripeness to the core;
To swell the gourd, and plump the hazel shells
With a sweet kernel; to set budding more,
And still more, later flowers for the bees,
Until they think warm days will never cease,
For Summer has o'erbrimmed their clammy cells.

Who hath not seen thee oft amid thy store?
Sometimes whoever seeks abroad may find
Thee sitting careless on a granary floor,
Thy hair soft-lifted by the winnowing wind;
Or on a half-reaped furrow sound asleep,
Drowsed with the fume of poppies, while thy hook
Spares the next swath and all its twined flowers;
And sometimes like a gleaner thou dost keep
Steady thy laden head across a brook;
Or by a cider-press, with patient look,
Thou watchest the last oozings, hours by hours.

Where are the songs of Spring? Ay, where are they?
Think not of them, thou hast thy music too, -
While barred clouds bloom the soft-dying day
And touch the stubble-plains with rosy hue;
Then in a wailful choir the small gnats mourn
Among the river sallows, borne aloft
Or sinking as the light wind lives or dies;
And full-grown lambs loud bleat from hilly bourn;
Hedge-crickets sing, and now with treble soft
The redbreast whistles from a garden-croft;
And gathering swallows twitter in the skies.

thanks for the lovely autumn photos and for the beautiful poem... it's a strange feeling though, spring has hit here with a vengeance and starting to look more like a summer now whilst "down under" and in south africa/america the autumn is playing itself out...

the trees here are only now coming into leaf where they were totally bare two weeks ago, i contrast them with the browns and reds of the autumn season and can't imagine the feelings of that time of year right now... strange though, in australia i didn't know otherwise...

keep well...

Really beautiful photos, and, of course, a really beautiful poem. Here in London, though, it feels like Summer with hot hot sun and a blue sky. What a world, eh?

Thanks for printing Ode To Autumn. I studied it at school way back when ... oh it must've been '82 or '83! I'd forgotten it but I remember liking Keats a lot.

You're autumn leaves are stunning too. Vines are great value aren't they? Even after they yield their fruit they still have a little flourish left in them.

Enjoy your Autumn - it is a lovely time of year but I'm just loving the Spring now!

It is strange, isn't it, Bart, beginnings on one side of the world, endings on the other - I like to think of it as all part of the balance :-)

Enjoy that warm sunny weather, Sue, just hope it doesn't mean one of those devastatingly hot summers!

Thanks, girl with the mask!

Thanks, Rambler!

Well, like I say, Janey, one barely notices Autumn here, it kind of just goes from summer to winter with only leaves on the ground to show the seasons have somewhere gone through Autumn! I generally feel a bit cheated.

Lovely shots there AV. We also have a colourless autumn except for the European trees. Even my huge liquid amber just turns a sort of rusty yellow before it sheds. It seems as soon as daylight savings ends, winter is in force . . then with Eucalypts, they shed all year round! *cranks up the leaf blower*

Oh they're pretty - I'd like to go straight from summer to autumn to spring with no winter - where does that happen in the world? I might emigrate!!

Ha, don't talk to me about Eucalypts, Baino - I have four huge flowering gums in my garden and not only is leaves, it's also seed pods - and aren't they a bugger when they get stuck in the pool vacuum!

Might I suggest you try Mauritius, or elsewhere in the tropics, Laquet? ;-)

Breath-taking pics!I love the earthy feel of them :)

As for John Keats,I became his fan since the time I read "An Ode To A Grecian Urn" in school!

"Truth is beauty and beauty is truth" :)

The shots are fantastic! Ya done good, as they say in the southern US. And I love the Keats poem.

Brief anecdote: In grad school, a fellow student was asked during his oral exams what he thought of Keats. His reply? "Keats? I don't even know what they are."

It's a topsy turvy world isn't it? So weird to see (beautiful) photos of Autumn when we're finally getting a bit of sun:-)

I also remember doing an Ode to a Grecian Urn in school, Sameera! ;-)

Love the Keats anecdote, Billy - though 'tis a bit worrying... ;-)

I call it the balance of Nature, Lane :-)

Thanks, Lettuce - well, we lit our first fire of the season today - not really cold enough but certainly grey, wet and miserable enough!

fall and spring are both colorful seasons and times when my spirits are always charged with the energy that comes from being in the midst of transition an the promise of things to come.

thanks for sharing your autumnal colors...

Lovely shots, Vanilla. Here autumn digs its fingers in and hangs on for as long as possible.

Love the misty background in the vineyard shot.

There is a wonderfully tangible energy about spring and autumn, isn't there, Kimy - not to mention the colours. :-)

Thanks, Rob - I remember the autumns of my time in the UK, it was the first time I really became aware of autumn as a genuine season! ;-)

Beautiful pics. So strange though, for me, to think of autumn when over here we're eagerly biting into summer...
